About Cantores Olicanae

Cantores Olicanae formed in the 1970s and has been prominent in the Ilkley music scene ever since – apart
from a short hiatus during Covid (like all other choirs). However, that didn’t stop us singing, as we
faithfully joined weekly Zoom rehearsals with our Musical Director at the time.

We sing music ranging from baroque favourites like Vivaldi's Gloria to contemporary classics, such as Will Todd's 'Mass in Blue' with new compositions also performed. Our choice of music for the choir includes a cappella songs, and we also welcome soloists to perform with us.

Our current MD is James Savage-Hanford, who joined us in September 2023 and has already enthused us to reach for the heights. He has devised some interesting, themed programmes such as our recent concert 'My Love Dwelt in a Northern Land'.

We hold a minimum of 4 concerts a year: autumn (October or November), Christmas, early spring
(March) and summer (June). Our Christmas concert is a festive blend of choir pieces, audience carols
and readings, and our summer programme tends to be lighter, often with a jazzy feel.

We also host other events, such as singing workshops (half-day), aimed at people who don’t sing
much (apart from in the car or shower) and full-day ‘Come and Sing’ events when our guests work
on specific music, with an informal performance at the end.
