Ave Maria

A selection of music composed in honour of the Virgin Mary.

Sunday
March 22nd marks the Feast of the Annunciation and accross the ages, composers have found Mary the mother of Jesus to be a source of deep inspiration.
Our programme is about peace tranquility and wonder.

We include well known pieces such as Rachmaninoff's Bogoroditse Dyevo , one of the movements from his Vespers of 1915 , and Totus Tuus by the Polish composer Gorecki , written for the visit of Pope John Paul II to his homeland in 1987.

The central work is Cecilia Mcdowall’s “ Ave Maris Stella” . “Hail Star of the Sea” bears the dedication ‘Pro Pace’, for peace , after the horrific events of 11 th September 2001, this was composed as a simple peace anthem using words from a popular medieval Hymn.

The Latvian composer Dubra's Ave Maria 1 is a wonderfully restful work which
creates an almost mystical aura.
